What is extremism:

extremism
1. the condition or act of taking an extreme view.
2. the taking of extreme action. — extremist,n., adj.

I believe that (as shown in the definition,) extremism is when religion overweighs a persons’ moral judgement. Extremism can best be looked at if you know when and how it starts, and how it works. Religions can be put-down and misjudged because of the acts of a few extremists and from a lack of depth of that religion.

What is extremism and how do people respond to it?

I agree with this, we have classified this religion as violent and evil, only because of the acts of a few. Many people believe that Islam “is” extremism and that they are terrorists. The 9/11 event, something that everyone is familiar with may play a big role, along with modern media. The events that are planned by a handful of people represent the entire culture to us. In this quote it says that our enemy is extremism, I disagree with this, because extremism isn’t always bad. I think that there are different kind of extremism and that it depends more on the person in that religion, rather than the religion itself.

I chose this quote because it contradicts the previous one. Extremism isn’t bad in itself, it is when it is exaggerated and lied about that false images are created about the religion. I think that this is the worst part about extremism because it is more dangerous for other people, this can create stereotypes about the culture, it is like a first-impression.

Extremism has different looks. One group, although it’s more of a belief, is/are called the Fundamentalists. They do not believe in modern technology and discourage different technological and biological advances, and prefer old-fashioned lives. This is a kind of extremism, they greatly believe in their religion, and try to include it into daily life and politics. This statement shows extremism can be the same and/or different in different cultures although they mostly have the same goal.

What if I told you, that hundreds of years ago, going to church every week was considered a form of extremism, or that not going to church was considered a form of extremism. From that, people may have decided that going to church, or that not going to church should be a part of their culture. Would they all be extremists, or would it now just be a part of life. Extremism can have a long-term effect on society, “whether virtuous or malign.”
